UK plans to add control over Google in search

Story: The UK's competition regulator said on Tuesday (June 24) that it proposed to designate Google with a “strategic market situation”.

This means regulators will have greater control over how the U.S. tech giants operate search services.

The Bureau of Competition and Markets said the name is the first proposal under its new large-scale technology regime.

And being able to force Google to ensure fair rankings of businesses that appear in Google search.

It also recommends making it easier for users to access competitor search services.

And control the publisher whose content appears in search results.

It added that Google should also make its data more portable to help new businesses bring innovative products to market.

Google will be the first company designated since regulators won the new power this year.

This move can be implemented in October.

Google accounts for over 90% of UK searches.

The CMA said it has developed a roadmap for future actions for the company.

Google said the move could have a significant impact on businesses and consumers in the UK.

The tech giant added that CMA has broad considerations and no concentration.
