UN agencies present annual world refugee report

The global refugee population has climbed to record highs in recent years, and this trend will continue when the UN Refugee Agency released its latest annual report on Thursday.

The agency is officially known as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

The major humanitarian crises, including Sudan and several other African countries, remain largely unchanged.

However, there is one major development: the fall of the Bashar Assad regime in December 2024.

The collapse of the regime prompted some Syrians, especially those who fled to Germany, to return home after more than a decade of brutal civil war.

But it is not clear whether this shift will significantly reduce the total number of refugees around the world.
