Vietnam veterans reflect on the war 50 years later

Huntsville, Alabama (WHNT) – Rehabilitation comes in all forms at different times. For some Vietnam veterans, 50 years is not long enough to fully heal from their experiences.

The Vietnam War is one of the most controversial conflicts in American history, and its pain remains primitive 50 years after its end. Although time helps heal wounds, war still plagued many serving people.

“It took me nearly 50 years to get through some trauma,” said Vietnam veteran Allen Farley. “You stood next to someone and they were killed and you were still standing there, you know. Why?”

“I never knew I had PTSD or thought I had PTSD,” said Vietnam Navy veteran Wayne Harlan. “And then, suddenly, I couldn't fall asleep at night. I had nightmares.”

In order to achieve rehabilitation and peace, several veterans traveled to Vietnam for their 50th anniversary and visited the location where they fought. For others, the idea of going back is disturbing.

“The job is for you to get up, tie it up, and go find what you kill every day,” said Vietnam Army veteran John Chancellor. “And I don't need to go back there.”

“I don't think I can ever do it when I see those veterans back in Vietnam,” Farley said. I lost so many people there. ”

But it is not pleasant to think back on their home.

“Then you'll turn our uniforms into civilian clothing so you won't spit,” Harlan said.

“I’m wearing a uniform,” Farley said. “This guy walked behind me, hit me with his kidney, and ran away.”

Despite the huge losses, great sacrifices and disturbing memories, all three veterans said they would do it again. They point to the honor and pride of the country they love so deeply.

“My job is to take care of local guys,” the principal said. “Whatever it is. Who they are. They are American.”
