Racial slander found on Mexican high school sign

Mexico, N.Y. (WSYR) – Mexico Central School District officials say they have identified those who have sabotaged high school signs by turning letters to create racial discrimination.

The slander may have disappeared, but the truth is, it is first and foremost some people in the community.

“It's a disappointment to see this… to remind me that we're not where we should be,” said Roy Terry, a resident of Richland Township.

Terry expressed concern that the news was displayed in areas visible to students and the public.

“That’s not great, and I hope the school government can address it with a very clear community stance,” he said.

Terry said the Mexican community has a lot of work to do in combating racism.

“We have to be clean, and most of us do have a lot of racist tendencies…just part of our character… part of our personality,” Terry said. “But it's something we have to fight against.”

Dr. Donna Runner, president of the Mexican College and Central School District, said they will follow the district’s code of conduct, involving punishment for those who articulate slander. The lock has been placed on the sign to prevent future, similar incidents from happening.

We are very frustrated by the vandalism in high school, which includes posting racial slurs on our logo. This incident does not reflect the values we adhere to in the community. We strongly oppose any form of discrimination and are committed to establishing an inclusive and respectful environment for all.

The alert community members immediately removed offensive information and informed us, thus taking quick action. Our high school principals and school resource officers have successfully identified individuals responsible for this reprehensible conduct. We will follow our code of conduct to properly address this issue.

We sincerely thank the community members who helped resolve this incident. Your alertness and proactive response are commendable and reflect the strength and unity of our community.

We jointly oppose hatred and discrimination, and we will continue to work to ensure that everyone has a safe and enthusiastic environment.
