The Chega Party in Portugal became the main opposition and joined the surge in the far right in Europe

Lisbon, Portugal (AP) – Portugal's anti-immigrant chega party gained another political interest on Wednesday after being appointed as the second largest seat in parliament on Wednesday – meaning it will be the head of parliament's opposition to the new government.

This breaks the model of the mainstream political parties in the central right and center-left of Portugal, alternating between leading the government or leading the opposition.

Since the May 18 election, Cage's big strides coincide with the progress of the far-right forces elsewhere. In Europe, which included ethnic gatherings in France, Italian brothers and German alternatives, are now politically mainstream.

Leading the opposition is an achievement that once won the first election six years ago. Recently, it has taken a tough stance against immigration and a strong stance that traditional parties cannot form a lasting government. The May 18 election is the third time in Portugal in many years.

Chega means “enough” and won 60 seats in the National Assembly on Wednesday after receiving two seats from overseas voters in 10.6 million EU countries.

“This is a profound change in the political system in Portugal,” Andre Ventura, the leader of the Chaigu, told supporters, after Chega defeated the socialists with two seats.

The Social Democratic League, led by the Social Democratic Party, occupied two seats, counting it to 88.

After the election, incoming Prime Minister Luis Montenegro is already considering leading another minority government, similar to that which fell in a vote of confidence two months ago after the election.

But now Montenegro and other political parties will face an exciting far-right competitor who runs under the slogan of “Save Portugal” and describes itself as a nationalist party.
